What is Pilates?

Developed by Joseph H. Pilates, the term Pilates refers to the method he called “Contrology.” Joseph’s system consists of over 500 exercises designed to help any individual improve their overall fitness through complete coordination of the body, mind and spirit.

The first step is the most challenging. While learning the basic exercises, the Pilates student acquires complete control of their body through proper repetition of the exercises. The beginning student strives for precision and correct form.

Gradually, the student progressively acquires natural rhythm and coordination of movement, or flow. This flow becomes incorporated into all of your activities - physical, mental, subconscious.

The true method of Pilates is designed to give you suppleness and natural grace that will be reflected in the way you perform your daily activities. You will develop muscular power, endurance and coordination. You will have the ability to perform strenuous activities without undue fatigue or strain.

There are no shortcuts. A certain level of commitmet is required to achieve your personal goals. You will feel the difference first. If you commit to doing the exercises three times a week, you will start to see the difference. If you continue to progress and build on what you’ve accomplished, you will have an entirely new body.

Every body is different, and Pilates is good for every body. Give it a try - you will be amazed at what you can do when you put your mind to it!
